Drivers for any rideshare company are more at risk for accidents and injuries due to the nature of their job. That is why Uber offers insurance to cover their drivers and riders in the event of a collision. However, there are limits to what they can cover. Many factors are taken into account when deciding which coverage applies in a given situation, including who was at fault, whether or not the driver was online, and whether the driver was en-route to a trip or on-trip.

When online and at fault, Uber insurance offers $50,000 to cover each person and a $100,000 max per accident for injuries. Only $25,000 in property damage to other drivers is offered per accident, meaning that if the damages exceed any of these amounts, Uber drivers may find themselves responsible for the additional costs.

When en-route or on a trip, Uber insurance covers up to $1,000,000 for property damage and injuries to both riders and third parties in an accident where the uber driver is at fault. For the rideshare vehicle driven at the time of the accident, Uber offers coverage for the actual cash value of drivers’ cars after a $2,500 deductible, meaning an up-front, out-of-pocket payment from the driver.

Uber offers an Optional Injury Protection that can be purchased to cover for medical expenses that exceed the amount insurance covers, also known as Underinsured Motorist Coverage. Therefore, without this opt-in, Uber does not cover any additional medical expenses that exceed the limits of other insurance policies.
